If the registry keys that pertain to Winsock (Windows Sockets) become damaged or corrupt, you might get error messages when attempting to use Winsock programs such as Internet Explorer, and you might not be able to obtain an IP address or be unable to release and renew your IP address. You can use the Netdiag tool that is included in the Support Tools on the XP installation CD, or you can use Msinfo32 (built into XP). If these tools indicate corrupted Winsock keys in the registry, you can delete them and reinstall the TCP/IP protocol to fix the problem, by following the instructions in KB article 811259 at
